MAPLE, SOFT: Acer saccharinum Unlike Hard Maple, the term Soft Maple is used to describe several different species of Maple, most commonly Silver Maple and Red Maple. When examined side-by-side it can be extremely difficult to distinguish between hard and soft Maple. Indeed, soft maple is only soft in relation to hard maple and is actually a good choice for many of the same applications as hard maple. Soft maple typically weighs in around 35 lbs. per cubic foot. Janka scale: 700-950
